Despite the Flamingo Hotel in Cancun being marketed as a 4 and sometimes even a 5-star hotel, this Cancun hotel barely amounts to a 3 star. Or at least that is my personal opinion. Granted, it is old, and it can’t compete with all the new mega resorts sprouting all along the beaches of this Mexican town. But it’s also run down, which does not necessarily have to go hand in hand. (picture the Vatican… quite old, uh? Not run down at all).
The Flamingo Hotel in Cancun is not a resort. Meaning that is not a huge place with all the amenities under the sun. It has, though, one of the best stretches of beach in Cancun, and that makes up for a lot of its shortcomings. After all, you are here to enjoy the beach, not to play tennis or basketball or put put golf (yes, you can find those amenities in a lot of resorts in Cancun).
The Flamingo Hotel in Cancun is located in the heart of the Cancun Hotel Zone, with plenty of restaurants, bars, discos, coffeeshops, stores and even a supermarket nearby. You can’t find a better located hotel in all of Cancun. It has the Caribbean sea lapping at its pools, and the Nichupte lagoon right across the street, so expect gorgeous sunrises and breathtaking sunsets!
The rooms are spacious, but unimpressive, as they are simply furnished. A good amount of them have a unobstructed and quite close ocean view, even whitewater view. The bathrooms are oldish but fairly clean, mattresses acceptable (medium softness, medium comfort) and in general the rooms are acceptable.
The staff in the hotel however do their best to make sure that your visit is the absolute best. Carmen was one of the waitresses and she greeted us every morning and evening with a huge smile. You know. That kind of smile that hits the eyes. She loved her job and we made sure to tip her nicely. And and the rest of the fast, friendly and responsive staff.
The hotel features two outdoors pools and an oversized round jacuzzi. They’re both clean, and not overcrowded. There’s a pool bar and an indoor bar which is open at night. No entertainment staff makes for a quiet, peaceful atmosphere, something that many of us appreciate.
The staff is friendly, the food is good without being superb, and the drinks are decent. Don’t expect a lavishly stocked bar but the bartenders will do their best to accommodate your requests. So make sure when they do. To tip big and tip often.
In general, for its great beach and location, despite it showing its age, we give the Flamingo Hotel in Cancun, 3 stars. And we think you might want to consider it on your next trip. Might help you save a bit.
